Mission:
- To promote Easton’s vision of a community that has as its core values freedom from bigotry, hatred, intolerance, and disrespect.
- To build a stronger, more unified Town that respects and recognizes both our diversity and our commonalities.
- To work with community groups and agencies to educate, promote understanding to eliminate prejudice and intolerance, and to mediate within the community whenever needed.
- To confront statements and actions that conflict with the core values expressed above.
Membership:
The membership shall consist of a minimum of seven (7) and a maximum of eleven (11) members. Membership will include: one member of the Board of Selectmen, appointed by its Chair, one member of the School Committee, appointed by its Chair, and a minimum of four to a maximum of 8 at-large members, appointed by the Board of Selectmen. The at-large members shall be residents of Easton. The Town of Easton Civil Rights Officer shall also serve, with voting rights. The Board of Selectmen designee and the School Committee designee shall serve for one year terms. The at-large members shall serve for staggered three year terms.
Advisory Council:
The EHRC may form a non-voting advisory council reflecting the diversity of Easton in order to tap the wealth of experience in the various organizations and groups in the Town. The Advisory Council shall assist and advise the EHRC in carrying out its duties.
Public Participation:
Residents from the community shall be encouraged to participate in EHRC meetings.
Responsibilities
The Easton Human Rights Committee shall meet at least five (5) times per year. The Committee’s responsibilities will include:
1. Education: Advocate appreciation for and respect for diversity.
2. Community Outreach: Organize community events to constructively promote diversity and tolerance.
3. Community Response: Respond to issues that challenge the human rights of any individual or group in our community.
The Easton Human Rights Committee may work with like committees of other localities and with organizations with which it shares a common purpose, and should use any available materials, advice, or assistance from other organizations, that may be helpful in accomplishing its mission.
The Committee will report at least annually on its activities to the Board of Selectmen..
